Push-pull dyes based on Michler's aldehyde: Design and characterization of the optical and electrochemical properties

Fifteen dyes based on Michler's aldehyde used as the electron donating group and differing by accepting groups have been designed synthesized. Interestingly, all showed a broad absorption extending over visible range. Examination of solvatochromism in twenty-three solvents different polarities revealed these to give remarkable linear correlations using Kamlet-Taft solvent polarity scale or SPP Catalan empirical scales. The were also characterized photoluminescence spectroscopy well cyclic voltammetry. To get deeper insight into optical properties dyes, theoretical calculations carried out.
